Good things come to those who wait.

Well, it was overcast, cloudy, foggy and snowing throughout the day and early evening yesterday April 2, 2010. It must have been some kind of late April Fools joke on Hendrik and Kathrin. They were visiting Yellowknife for the first time, hoping to get a chance to photograph the Aurora (Northern Lights). So, they arrived did a quick tour around town and after a couple of hours were back in their Hotel room. I picked them up to give them a personal tour of our great city, then out for dinner and then back to my place for coffee and some friendly chat. We waited and waited for the sky to clear and it did but, still there was no big light show for us to see. Thinking there is always something to photograph we headed out anyway. We arrived at Vee Lake to find a dull band of Aurora and we thought we would try a capture it. It wasn’t going that well but, we continued to try, and continued to wait and see what would happen. Then, all of a sudden, the Aurora came to life. We were snapping away trying our best to catch what we saw in the sky on our camera sensors. It was Hendrik and Kathrin’s first time seeing the Aurora (except for in photographs of course) and I think they had a good time. It was now around 1:30 am and we started to pack up our camera gear. Kathrin’s battery had died and we were all a little cold, it was minus 18. Just as we were getting in the truck the northern lights started to fade and as we drove away more fog rolled in. So, we waited and wondered only to get the show we wanted. There were happy people all around. Here is a sample of what I was able to see. I wonder if I head out Highway 3 today will I have the same luck with Buffalo? As always thanks for reading and Happy Shooting.

  3. Thanks again for the lessons you taught us on the first evening! We would have been lost without all your advice and returned home with a lot of bad pictures (insert joke about Kathrins pics being better than mine here).

The one with the little bit of red on the right side is my favorite, hope we’ll see more different colors next time we head up to your town.
